MeDeMAP’s film essay AGON: Constructions of Democracy (2025) will be featured at the MCAP Conference. The session will bring together media academics, professionals, and policymakers for an interactive discussion on democracy as a lived and contested practice rather than a fixed institutional model.

The film serves as a starting point for dialogue on how democracy is imagined, negotiated, and practised across cultural and social contexts. Led by Nico Carpentier, the session moves beyond traditional film analysis, using the essay to explore how media, aesthetics, and arts-based research foster democratic engagement, social justice, and inclusive dialogue.

Participants engage with key questions such as: How can democracy remain meaningful amid polarisation? How do intercultural experiences and migrant narratives reshape citizenship and belonging? What responsibilities do media practitioners and educators have in sustaining productive disagreement? As part of the MCAP Conference, we will document insights from the session to inform academic, professional, and policy discussions. By featuring AGON, MeDeMAP demonstrates the potential of creative, media-based approaches to rethink and strengthen democratic practices today.
