A new book chapter authored by Andrea Miconi and Nico Carpentier has just been published as part of the edited volume Rethinking Media and Communication: A Critical Sociological Lens (Brill, 2026), edited by Paško Bilić and Thomas Allmer.
Titled “Theorizing a Multidimensional Model for Analyzing Data Fetishism: Reconciling Marxist and Freudian Approaches to the ‘Split’”, the chapter develops a critical theoretical framework for analysing data fetishism by bringing together Marxist and Freudian perspectives. The contribution offers a multidimensional model that advances critical debates on data, power, and subjectivity in contemporary media and communication environments.
The chapter is published with open access and is directly connected to MeDeMAP’s Work Package 2 (WP2), with a shortened version to be integrated into Deliverable D2.4 that goes through theory-driven re-analysis of the project’s interventions. It also reflects a productive collaboration with Work Package 5 (WP5), underlining the project’s interdisciplinary and cross-WP approach.
This publication contributes to MeDeMAP’s broader objective of critically examining the role of data and media structures in shaping democratic practices and public discourse.
