The MeDeMAP project will convene policymakers, journalists, and civil society representatives on 13th January 2026 to discuss the future of media regulation in Europe.

The event, titled “Regulating Media for Future Democracies: Political and People’s Voices,” will take place in the European Quarter between 9:30 am and 11:30 am. Members of the European Parliament, national parliamentarians, European Commission officials, and policy actors will examine the intersection of media regulation and democratic governance.

Building on MeDeMAP’s research into European political information environments, the programme features two roundtables addressing critical questions about EU media policy. The first roundtable will explore next steps following the adoption of the EU Media Freedom Act (EMFA), with contributions from Irena Joveva MEP (Renew Europe), Anna Herold from the European Commission’s DG CNECT, Julie Majerczak of Reporters Without Borders, and Renate Schroeder from the European Federation of Journalists. Beata Klimkiewicz of Jagiellonian University will chair the discussion.

The programme includes a screening of “AGON: Constructions of Democracy,” a film essay that examines the meaning of democracy and its contestation across cultures. Nico Carpentier of Charles University will chair this session.

The second roundtable, “What do European citizens have to teach EU media policy?”, will feature perspectives from the citizens’ parliaments organised by MeDeMAP in Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, and Slovenia. Participants from each country will present findings from these deliberative forums, with responses from Evelyn Regner MEP (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) and Lena Schilling MEP (the Greens/European Free Alliance). Helmut Peissl of COMMIT will chair the session.

The event is hosted by Irena Joveva MEP (Renew Europe) and co-hosted by Marina Kaljurand MEP (Socialists and Democrats).

Registration is free yet mandatory, via this form.

Further details, including the confirmed venue location and registration information, will be announced shortly. Interested parties may contact the organisers at info@mc.medemap.eu.
