The film essay “Agon – Constructions of Democracy” will premiere at Prague’s Ponrepo Kino on October 23, 2025, at 1pm. The screening is free to attend, though advance registration is required.

“Agon” examines the complex and contested nature of democracy through a blend of political theory, cultural analysis, and artistic expression. The film combines the visual aesthetics of Prague with intercultural dialogue featuring the city’s Indonesian community and other resident groups, opening new spaces for democratic inquiry.

Drawing inspiration from “Democracy and Media in Europe” by Nico Carpentier and Jeffrey Wimmer, the film essay merges scholarly and artistic approaches. The work incorporates political and cultural theory alongside fiction and dance, presenting audiences with a layered examination of democratic concepts.

The film addresses fundamental questions about democracy’s meaning and potential, examining how democratic ideals relate to physical and social spaces. It highlights democracy as a continuous site of political struggle that requires active protection against various threats.

As both an artistic work and academic project, “Agon” invites viewers to reconsider their understanding of democratic processes and possibilities. The film is part of the broader MeDeMAP initiative, with additional information available at constructionsofdemocracy.eu.

A private screening for the consortium will also take place at the next project meeting, in September 2025.
