Drawing on a series of in-depth interviews, it provides a unique, participant-centred perspective on the deliberative process and its democratic value.

The Czech Citizens’ Assembly, developed within the framework of the MeDeMAP – Mapping Media for Future Democracies project, aimed to actively involve citizens in discussions around media systems and democratic practices. By creating a structured and inclusive space for deliberation, the initiative sought to empower participants to reflect, debate, and contribute to complex societal issues.

The findings presented in the article highlight several key dimensions of the experience. Participants emphasised the importance of being heard, the value of engaging with diverse perspectives, and the sense of responsibility associated with contributing to democratic dialogue. Many described the process as a meaningful and constructive way to engage with media-related challenges.

Importantly, the article reinforces the relevance of participatory approaches such as Citizens’ Assemblies in strengthening democratic engagement. It illustrates how initiatives like the one implemented in Czechia can foster trust, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the relationship between media and democracy.

This contribution adds to MeDeMAP’s ongoing efforts to explore innovative mechanisms that support more inclusive, participatory, and resilient democratic systems across Europe.

Read the full article here:
https://cz.ejo-online.eu/8023/nejnovejsi-prispevky/this-is-how-democracy-should-work-perspectives-citizen-assembly

A new article published by the European Journalism Observatory (EJO) brings attention to one of MeDeMAP’s key project activities: the Citizens’ Assembly on Media and Democracy in Czechia.
